Golden Oaks Older Adults

The Golden Oaks program enriches the lives of older adults, while allowing them to live independently as long as possible. Activities include health information and screenings, consumer protection seminars, games, arts and crafts, gardening, community shopping, field trips, daily exercise, movies and more. This program is offered at no charge for adults 55 and older.

Participants meet weekdays at the YWCA from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The YWCA provides transportation within a five mile radius, and each day participants receive a nutritious meal from Meals on Wheels of Wake County.

Crowns of Glory Fashion Show

Each summer we celebrate the fashionable tradition of stylish hats worn by African-American women. Our Crowns of Glory Fashion Show is a free event, open to the public, featuring the finest styles and headdress traditions for both women and men. Models from our Golden Oaks program and those in the community showcase their collection of hats that demonstrate the freedom, fashion and beauty of this long-standing tradition.

Senior Prom

One of our most popular events gives older adults the opportunity to step out in style each September for an evening of dining and dancing, while enjoying the company of contemporaries. The enchanting evening features smooth jazz sounds and wouldn’t be complete without the crowning of a King and Queen. This yearly event is free event and open to the public.

AARP Driver Safety

Often older drivers have problems driving in situations that require quick response, full vision, and interaction with other drivers. This can lead to injuries and traffic violations from failure to yield right-of-way, improper turning, and incorrect lane changes. More than 700,000 people nationwide have completed the AARP Driver Safety Program to learn defensive driving techniques.

AARP-trained volunteers teach this program at the YWCA for older drivers in our community. It includes information on age-related cognitive and physical changes that affect driving and how to adjust driving in response to those changes. Eighty percent of participants say they change their driving behavior as a result of this course.
