Screenings & Awareness Events
ENCOREplus®
ENCOREplus is a signature YWCA program designed to reduce mortality from breast cancer for women ages 40 and older. Those with limited resources receive at no-cost: a comprehensive breast health education, an annual mammogram, and a clinical breast exam performed by trained medical practitioners.
Women with no health insurance, with an annual insurance deductible of more than $200, or with an annual household income of less than $30,000 qualify for the program. Monthly screening dates and locations vary in Wake, Johnston and Franklin counties. Pre-registration is required and transportation can be available from the YWCA for women in need. ENCOREplus is made possible with support from Avon Foundation Breast Care Fund, Johnston Health, Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, Rex Healthcare, Triangle United Way, and Susan G. Komen for the Cure, N.C. Triangle Affiliate.
HEARTplus®
We directly combat cardiovascular disease with heart health education and screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose irregularities. The HEARTplus program impacts minorities and women of low-resource ages 40 and older, helping them to identify personal risks and introduce effective measures to reduce risk. Guest speakers provide information on stroke and cardiovascular disease and take the time to answer questions on all heart health matters. HEARTplus is made possible with support from the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust.
National Senior Health Day
A fun day for older adults, this special free program helps keep individuals ages 55 years and older healthy and fit. The day is filled with fun activities and health screenings that focus on those areas important to us as we grow older: staying active, osteoporosis, medication management, eye care, sensible physical activity, and so forth.
National Women’s Health Week
National Women’s Health & Fitness Day
These free events focus on improving women's health through awareness and screening programs. Topics covered include: heart disease; breast, cervical and lung cancer awareness; osteoporosis; HIV/STD prevention and maternal health. Free Lunch ‘n Learn sessions keep participants abreast of specific health concerns for older adults, minorities, and women of low resource.
National Breast Health Awareness Month
We offer month-long events to help women learn about the keys to breast health. Guest speakers discuss risk factors for breast cancer, early detection techniques and treatment options. Women with limited resources are offered educational workshops and also receive free clinical breast exams.
Freedom From Smoking
This eight-week program at the YWCA is designed by the American Lung Association to help smokers quit. It addresses reasons to quit, how to remain smoke-free over time, and medications and proven techniques to change behaviors that increase lifelong success. Participants must be age18 and older, and pre-registration is required. The program fee of $60 includes the cost of all materials, with scholarships available to those in need.
