APRIL 2010 EDITION

FEARLESS LEADERSHIP

Folami K. Bandele For 150 years the YWCA USA has demonstrated fearless leadership during challenging times. Today, families we serve feel the brunt of economic uncertainty, rising unemployment and diminishing community resources. Reason enough why the YWCA Greater Triangle is expanding programs and services for area families.

The YWCA has established new partnerships, engaged volunteers willing to make an impact, and sought out new funding sources to meet the critical needs of our community. We’re committed to providing job training and employment programs for both women and men, as well as health care access to uninsured and under-insured women who need our help the most, and afterschool programs for at-risk youth.

Amidst all of this tremendous program activity, we’ve made significant strides in strengthening the impact of our mission in the community. It truly is an exciting era to be an organization driven by the mission to eliminate racism and empower women.

This past year was filled with tremendous change, excitement, challenge and opportunity for the YWCA. Landmark elections on the state and national levels ushered into office both the first female Governor of the State of North Carolina and our country’s first African-American President. Conversations at kitchen tables, in classrooms, at the office water cooler, in places of worship, and in the media have engaged passionate discussions about gender and race in our country.

In the Greater Triangle region, we launched our own important conversations with Women In Connection, an unprecedented women’s leadership series in partnership with Meredith College. This program explores the intersection of racism and sexism in limiting women’s leadership, focusing on promoting leadership through authenticity, relationships and collaboration.

As we enter a new decade, the YWCA Greater Triangle is proud to launch numerous exciting initiatives to further communicate our impact in the community. This very forum will highlight members, staff and others who make a difference in support of our mission to empower women and eliminate racism.

We are deeply appreciative of the many members, volunteers, donors and community partners whose immeasurable contributions sustain our work and further our vision of peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.
